Australia Day 1920 |

Henry Charles and Sarah Dyer

The Landsborough area was first settled in 1871
by Isaac Burgess. It was known as Mellum Creek and became
a stopping point for Cobb & Co on the route from
Brisbane to Gympie. Burgess built the first hotel, store
and butchers shop. There was also considerable activity
from timber cutters harvesting red cedar, beech, hoop
and bunya pine from the Blackall Range.
In 1890 the first railway train arrived and the
town was renamed Landsborough after William Landsborough
(1825-1886). He was an enthusiastic early explorer and
was the first explorer to cross the continent from north
to south. He was also asked to lead a search for Burke
and Wills. In his latter years he retired to Caloundra.
This property was named Loch Lamerough.
Landsborough Shire Council was formed in 1912. The
first meeting in the Chambers especially built for this
purpose was held in 1924. In 1976 this building became
the Landsborough Shire Historical Museum which today
is a major tourist attraction.

Early businessmen in the town were energetic and
venturous. Many owned multiple enterprises. Henry Dyer
came to Landsborough as the butcher in 1886 and by 1890
was leasing three businesses. His beautiful Queenslander
style home still stands today and is a popular tourist
attraction in the centre of the town.
Other prominent pioneers of the town include John
Tytherleigh, Isaac Burgess, James Campbell, John McNabb,
Arthur Leeding and William Falconer.
Today some former business sites
have been used for other purposes while others are still
used for the purpose for which they were used by our
pioneers.
